Florida know-how

Mulch or rock?

Mulch feeds the soil as it breaks down, holds moisture and keeps roots cooler, which suits most planted beds in sandy Florida soil. The University of Florida recommends a layer about two to three inches deep, kept away from trunks and stems.

Rock lasts for years and does not wash or float in heavy rain, so it works well in drainage paths, narrow side yards and around palms. In full sun it holds heat, so it is best paired with plants that like it hot and dry.

I can’t say enough about this company. Ben and his crew are top notch. They took their time and completely transformed my landscaping and installed some amazing lighting. Ben even went above and beyond and searched three counties to find the perfect rocks! My house looks amazing and my neighbors are so jealous!

FAQ

Common questions

How deep should mulch be?

About two to three inches. Too thin and weeds come through. Too thick, or piled against trunks, and it can hold moisture where it causes rot.

Does rock need fabric underneath?

Usually, yes. Landscape fabric under rock slows weeds and keeps the stone from sinking into the sand.

Which mulch is best?

Pine bark, pine straw and other shredded wood mulches all work well. Pick a color and texture you like, then keep it at the right depth.
