Barrier island yards
On the island, wind and salt spray decide what thrives. Salt-tolerant plants, sturdy palms and careful placement go a long way, and sandy soil drains so fast that beds need good mulch and smart irrigation.
Near the lagoon
Along the Indian River Lagoon, yards see more wind and some salt in the air. Many local governments limit fertilizer during the summer rainy season to protect the lagoon, so plants that thrive without heavy feeding make the most sense.
Inland yards
