Tree trimming

Pruning that clears your roof, removes dead wood and builds stronger structure, without topping or stripping the tree bare.

What is included

What good trimming does

  1. Deadwood out

Dead, broken and hanging branches removed before they fall on their own.

  2. Clearance

Limbs lifted off the roof, driveway, sidewalk and the house.

  3. Structure

Young and mid-size trees shaped toward one strong trunk and well spaced limbs.

  4. Thinning, not stripping

Selective cuts that let wind through the canopy while keeping the leaves the tree needs.

Good to know

Pruning for hurricane season

Research from the University of Florida after recent hurricanes found that trees with good structure held up better in high winds. Removing weak, crossing and overlong limbs before storm season is one of the best things you can do for a big tree.

Topping a tree, or stripping the inside of the canopy and leaving tufts at the ends, has the opposite effect. It invites decay and fast, weakly attached regrowth that breaks easily in the next storm.

I would highly recommend Ben and his crew! We’ve used his services twice in the last few years. He’s very knowledgeable and puts a great deal of thought into his work. He saved a beloved oak tree for us and pruned another saving it from being removed.

FAQ

Common questions

When should trees be trimmed?

Many trees can be pruned at any time of year. Getting structural work done before hurricane season, which runs June 1 to November 30, is a good habit.

How much can be cut at once?

As a rule of thumb, removing more than about a quarter of the live canopy in one visit stresses most trees. Good trimming takes what is needed and stops.

Is topping ever a good idea?

Almost never. Topped trees regrow quickly with weak branches and are more likely to fail in storms.
