Palm trimming

Palm trimming the way palms need it: dead fronds, seed pods and coconuts removed, and the green fronds left to feed the tree.

What is included

What palm trimming covers

  1. Dead fronds

Brown, dead fronds removed cleanly, close to the trunk without cutting into it.

  2. Seed pods and flowers

Pods and flower stalks removed to cut down on mess and seedlings.

  3. Coconuts

Coconuts cleared before they fall on people, cars or the pool cage.

  4. Boots and cleanup

Loose old frond bases cleaned up where they pull away easily.

Good to know

Why over-trimming hurts palms

The tight “hurricane cut” that leaves a palm with a few fronds pointing straight up looks tidy, but University of Florida guidance is clear that it weakens palms. Green fronds are the palm’s only source of food, and it cannot regrow a trunk or branch out like a tree.

Palms also pull nutrients like potassium out of older fronds as they age. Cutting yellowing fronds early can make a deficiency worse. The rule of thumb: remove only fully dead fronds, and leave every frond that points above horizontal.

Ben and his crew did a great job on trimming my palm trees and cutting some other trees down. Highly recommend them !!

FAQ

Common questions

How often should palms be trimmed?

It depends on the palm. Many need trimming once or twice a year. Coconut palms that drop nuts over walkways or pools may need it more often.

Should I trim palms before a hurricane?

Remove coconuts and dead fronds that could blow loose. Do not strip green fronds, since they help protect the palm’s growing point in the wind.

Why are my palm’s lower fronds yellow?

Often a nutrient deficiency, commonly potassium or magnesium in Florida soils. Leave those fronds on and look at fertilizing with a palm fertilizer.
